Congratulations to Claire Foley and Dr Maura Dowling on their new paper “How do nurses use the Early Warning Score in their practice? A Case study from an Acute Medical Unit”, which was recently published ahead of print in the Journal of Clinical Nursing.
Claire adopted a holistic single descriptive case study design to describe use, compliance and views and experiences of nurses with an Early Warning Score (EWS) in an acute medical ward. Non‐participant observation, semi‐structured interviews with nurses, and document analysis were conducted. Findings highlight the need for ongoing training, behavioural change and a cultural shift by health care professionals and organisations to ensure adherence with EWS escalation protocols.
Claire Foley is a Nurse Practice Development Facilitator in the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore, Co. Offaly.
